COVID-19 travel restrictions have been imposed in China’s Xinjiang as the country is facing increasing cases again after almost three years of the pandemic. The Chinese government issued measures to control the spread of the infection. As a result, train and bus services have been suspended. Also, passenger numbers on the flight have reportedly been reduced to 75% of capacity.

On Thursday, the National Health Commission announced that 97 cases had been detected in Xinjiang in the last 24 hours, and 91 cases were reported a day before. All of them were asymptomatic.

China’s government is relying on different COVID-19 measures. Xinjiang is under an intense surveillance system focusing on ubiquitous checkpoints, facial and voice recognition software, and universal cell phone monitoring being used to control travel among the population. Many residents complained about the earlier 40-day lockdown in Xinjiang, which resulted in strict restrictions.

President Xi Jinping is identical to China’s Zero COVID policy, who is expected to receive a third five-year term in office at the Congress beginning Oct 16, despite criticism from the World Health Organization and massive disruptions to the economy, education, and normal life in China.

Even after three years, COVID-19 has not been omitted. China has continuously faced ups and downs in several cases since the pandemic. People in China are struggling to get back to their routine life. Due to the lockdown, some residents reported being unable to get medicines and groceries, while some died in hospitals due to lack of medical care. Residents in the western region of Xinjiang said they went hungry during a more than 40-day lockdown.
