Recently, the US State Department brought good news for travellers. It distributed passports and announced a new beta test of an online passport renewal program. Now, tourists can virtually renew their passports conveniently and in less time.
However, there are conditions: the scheme is not for all; only those currently living in the United States and have passports issued between 2009 and 2015 can enjoy this program. Passport holders who are thinking about changing their name and DOB (date of birth) can’t utilise this program either. Also, travellers must be able to upload their photos on the site.
Another noteworthy point about the programs is that once someone submits their online application, their current passport will be cancelled immediately. So, people planning an international trip must refrain from applying. Renewing a passport online will cost $130; only credit cards are acceptable for making payments. The processing time for online passport renewal is 6 to 8 weeks, excluding mailing time, and it can be a bit longer than this. The program does not offer an option for expedited or urgent travel.
The State Department addressed the public about the launch on its website, saying, “We appreciate your patience while we test our system and prepare for a full launch of the updated online passport renewal system.”
Travellers seeking an urgent renewal are advised to make an appointment with a passport centre for processing. The State Department also published a digital guide that includes videos explaining the renewal process.
The State Department is hosting Special Passport Acceptance Fairs for travellers who don’t have passports and are seeking one for the first time. These fairs will be hosted in different locations this summer and assist travellers in the process.
