Thailand has officially announced an updated visa policy that grants Indian passport holders 30-day visa free entry into the country. This major decision is aimed at reviving the local tourism sector, which suffered a major blow following a recent decline in international visitor arrivals. Prior to this new rule, the Thai government had briefly eliminated its highly popular 60-day visa exemption scheme for travellers from 93 different countries, including India.
That previous policy change was driven by national security concerns and reports that the longer visa periods were being heavily misused. However, forcing Indian travellers to acquire a visa on arrival immediately backfired, triggering a sharp 20% drop in tourist arrivals from India. Recognising the severe economic impact on local businesses, Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports quickly intervened to propose a much more balanced travel solution.
The study of their extensive travel records reveals that the average duration of each visit by an Indian tourist in Thailand is around 7.2 days. Considering all this information, the Thai Cabinet determined that a stay of up to 30 days without a visa is sufficient for short breaks, shopping visits, and vacation purposes, thereby avoiding any possibility of visa overstay. Using this system, Indian tourists need not queue up at airports for any application process.
This new privilege places India in the same category as 58 other countries, including Croatia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Malta, the Maldives, and all 27 members of the European Union. According to the Thai government, the new visa policy will help promote international relations around the world. According to official reports, these revised immigration guidelines will fully take effect 15 days after they are formally published in Thailand’s Royal Gazette.
