Tourism is a leading driver of global economic expansion but also impacts the environment. According to recent studies, tourism-associated carbon emissions have increased fourfold, and India is the fourth largest contributor after the United States, China, and Germany. This alarming disclosure denotes the urgent need for sustainable tourism practices, especially in growing countries like India.
Tourism’s Environmental Impact
Tourism’s environmental impact includes carbon emissions from travel, lodging, and other activities. It produces 8% of global greenhouse gas. Tourism also contributes to resource usage, such as waste production and excessive water consumption in resorts, which affects natural habitats.
The founder & CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Hosteller said, “Post-pandemic, the tourism industry has shown remarkable recovery, driven by pent-up travel demand and rising disposable incomes, particularly among India’s burgeoning middle class. This resurgence has led to a marked shift towards domestic tourism, driven by travel restrictions and changing traveller preferences. However, the environmental impact remains substantial, necessitating investments in energy-efficient infrastructure and low-carbon transport solutions.”
India Promoting Sustainable Travel Practices
India can reduce travel emissions by promoting sustainable travel practices, such as responsible waste management, eco-tourism, and increasing the popularity of public transport. Shailendra Singh Rao, a global leader in climate change mitigation, says, “ The carbon footprint can be substantially diminished by selecting environmentally friendly alternatives such as electric vehicles, buses, and trains. Staying in hotels and eco-lodges that prioritise sustainable practices can also mitigate environmental impact.”
Sustainable tourism practices are crucial for economic benefits and the environment. By promoting eco-friendly travel options and utilising technology, India can significantly lessen its tourism-related carbon emissions and help global attempts to combat climate change.
