Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin unveiled India’s first-ever glass bridge in Kanyakumari. Many other VIPs, including DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, were present at the inauguration ceremony. The bridge inauguration occurred at the same time as the silver jubilee of the Thiruvalluvar statue unveiling by M Karunanidhi, the former CM.
This bridge is a major architectural marvel that connects the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the 133-foot Thiruvalluvar statue, two iconic landmarks of Kanniyakumari. The glass bridge was developed under a Rs 37-crore initiative by the government of Tamil Nadu and promises an improved visual and travel experience for visitors.
India’s first glass bridge is 77 metres long and 10 metres wide and has a bowstring-arch design, ensuring aesthetic appeal and durability. It is built with advanced construction technology and can withstand harsh coastal conditions, such as high humidity, salty sea air, and erosion. Walking on the bridge will feel like walking right above the ocean with no surface in between.
Previously, visitors had to use ferry services to commute between Vivekananda Memorial and Thiruvalluvar statue. This bridge reduces travel time as visitors can enjoy a short walk.
MK Stalin said this bridge would promote Kanniyakumari as a global tourist destination. Public Works and Highways Minister EV Velu highlighted the challenges they faced due to rough seas and environmental conditions while building this bridge.
