Kashmir witnessed a significant tourism boost, with arrivals breaking all the previous records. Approximately 2.95 million tourists have arrived in the state, a notable rise from the 2.71 million visitors in 2023 and 2.67 million in 2022.
Local Tourism Department officials share that promotional campaigns through tourism events, road shows, and digital and social media appearances have boosted tourist arrival. Improved law and order and a constant peaceful environment have compelled foreign tourists to visit the state in large numbers.
Official data shows that around 43,000 international visitors arrived by December 20; however, only 37,000 foreigners visited the state till the same date.
Tourism stakeholders say that the successful G20 played a key role in this unprecedented boost in tourism. Held in Srinagar in May 2023, the meeting showcased the region’s tourism potential on a global platform, creating a buzz for travellers.
Raja Yaqoob Farooq, the Director of Tourism, says the government is now focusing on promoting high-end and high-value tourism without ecological imbalance. He added, “All relevant departments will be sensitised and involved in safeguarding the region’s environmental integrity.”
In Kashmir, tourism is the second-largest industry after horticulture. Tourism contributes Rs 7,000 to Rs 7,500 crore to the state economy annually, while horticulture generates around Rs 10,000 to 11,000 crore.
