Recently, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) released the Annual Safety Review-2023. This report highlighted how India’s air travel safety has significantly improved compared to the previous two years. DGCA revealed that compared to 2021 and 2022, the number of risk-bearing air prox per million flights dropped by 25%. Not only that, but the number of EGPWS/GPWS (Ground Proximity Warning System) warnings per 10,000 departures has reduced by 92%.
The number of unstabilised approaches per 10,000 has continuously decreased with a reduction of around 23%. It has reduced the risk of Runway excursions and abnormal contact with the runway while taking off or landing, which can result in dangerous accidents.
With the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) Global Aviation Safety Plan (GASP), DGCA has introduced the National Aviation Safety Plan (NASP) to detect the National-High Risk Categories of Occurrences. The performance of NASP is monitored and published in the Annual Safety Report (ASR).

The Annual Safety Report shows aggregate safety data analysis. This data is acquired from DGCA and external sources like ICAO iSTARS (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target, Acquisition, and Reconnaissance). The data-driven approach ensures a robust process to identify emerging safety issues in air travel. It also helps in continuously refine existing procedures.
